The 6th Annual Dr. Sam Motsuenyane Lecture was held on 27 October 2023, bringing together leaders, academics, and community members to honor the legacy of Dr. Motsuenyane and explore the challenges and opportunities of South Africa’s agricultural and economic future. The keynote speaker, Minister Thoko Didiza, delivered an inspiring lecture that connected Dr. Motsuenyane’s life’s work with today’s pressing issues of food security, land reform, and youth empowerment.

Minister Didiza reflected on Dr. Motsuenyane’s pioneering contributions as a farmer, businessman, and national leader. She emphasized his deep understanding of land as both an economic asset and a foundation for community prosperity. Drawing on his vision, she called for renewed focus on agriculture as a cornerstone for South Africa’s economic transformation.
In her address, Minister Didiza also spoke about the impact of global challenges — climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and pandemics — on food systems and livelihoods. She highlighted the need for South Africa to strengthen its agricultural sector and equip the next generation with the tools and opportunities to lead in this critical space.

A strong emphasis was placed on the role of youth, particularly young Black South Africans, in shaping a future that is more self-reliant, inclusive, and resilient. Minister Didiza urged young people to view agriculture not only as a means of survival but as a platform for innovation, entrepreneurship, and long-term prosperity.
The 6th Annual Lecture underscored the relevance of Dr. Motsuenyane’s vision in today’s South Africa, reminding all in attendance that his legacy is a call to action for responsible leadership, economic justice, and community empowerment.
